Closet Organisation

Closet Organization: By Sarita Maheshwari Sharda (certified Image consultant)

With ownership of any resource comes responsibility. Same in the case of clothes. To maintain an attractive, appropriate and affordable appearance, one must maintain closet.

Closet organization means allowing time and space for clothing care. Closet storage and organization is a unique challenge as it requires continuing attention, planning and organization, It demands a routine for clothing related tasks, such as hemming up a dress, hand-washing a silk dress, sewing on button, pressing a skirt or rearranging closet. Some tasks are daily, others are weekly and some may be seasonal or annual. Clothes come in different colors, seasons, sleeve lengths, hemlines, etc. Organizing your closet is actually less work and more fun. Here you will find my best tips and how-to compiled into one neat and organized closet:

Keep your closet in shape by treating it like a small room. Like any room it should be clean, decorated and arranged. Pay attention to lighting, wall color, and floor coverings. Use the closet fullest potential. Once you have shaped down your wardrobe, you need to assess the layout of your closet. Make sure to utilize backs of doors, floor space, and all interior walls. When you go to shop for boxes, bins, and other necessary space-savers, make sure you have your closet measurements in hand.

The purpose of closet is not only storage but display also. Your closet should display your clothes so that you can wear them.  Use every square inch of your closet. Hang shoe racks on the back of your closet door. Classic belt hangers with multiple hooks are also a good solution for hanging camisoles, bras, or scarves. Make sure you can close the closet doors without hitting or smashing what is hanging there.

Keep items you use frequently at eye level or below (middle and lower shelves) within easy reach and items you rarely use higher up. Labeled boxes are good for storing things like raincoat, swimming costume etc. or sweaters because you can rotate them higher or lower in your closet depending on the season.

Invest in the right kind of hanger for the type of clothing you are hanging. Use padded hangers for items made from delicate fabrics, plastic hangers for button-down shirts, and sturdy wood hangers for suit jackets as they help retain the shape of the items.

Remove all wire hangers (they don't properly support your clothes) and plastic dry-cleaner bags (they don't allow fabrics to breathe, keeping the chemicals used in dry cleaning in your clothes).

Save time in the morning by coordinating your wardrobe. Sort by color, and hang like-types of clothing together (i.e. skirts, pants, blouses, etc.).

If the light in your closet is weak, get a brighter blub. Apply a new coat f light colored washable, semi-gloss paint and you can also purchase one  or two battery operated bulb.

A full length mirror can be mounted on one side of door to see yourself  from top to bottom

If space allow, place a laundry bag, basket in the closet

Closet space, or lack of it, is an age old problem but you can organize your closet, in such a way that it accommodates your clothes and accessories, and without the project becoming too complicated, elaborate or expensive. It's no wonder you may need a little but regular time and organization to get your wardrobe done and stored properly. Closet often get ignored because they are behind the door but a negative attitude about closet organization is an attitude no one can afford to keep.
